Description: Thallus is stout, black to brownish black, reaching 30 cm (12 in) tall. The main axis has stout, unbranched determinate branches whorled around it like a bottle brush; indeterminate branches are rare. Habitat: This tough perennial forms mats on rocks in the low intertidal of semi-exposed habitats. Similar taxa:  Neorhodomela aculeata, N. oregona.
