    Red Tides
Red tides are caused by a bloom of dinoflagellates. They can occur during the summer months and some species produce a toxin that accumulates in the tissues of filter-feeding organisms such as clams.

This particular photo was taken during June, 2005 in Southeast Alaska and was identified as the non-toxic species Noctaluca scintillans.
