Description: Thallus is branched, reddish brown, growing to 10 cm (4 in) tall. Branching is alternate (although appearing radial), dense, giving the thallus a somewhat “woolly” appearance; the uniseriate branches develop a covering of pigmented cells (cortication) except for the ends of the branches, which remain uncovered and terminate in pointed tips. Habitat: This perennial is found on bedrock in the high to mid (rarely low) intertidal of semi-exposed to exposed habitats.
