Tokidaea chilkatensis

Tokida's red felted skein

Authority
S.C.Lindstrom & M.J.Wynne
Thallus to 10 cm (2.5 in) tall but usually much shorter, uniaxial with each axial cell producing a pair of opposite whorl branchlets, either one of which can continue to elongate to become an indeterminate branch in the same plane (indeterminate branches abundant and occurring irregularly). Rhizoidal cortication developing from basal cells of whorl branches and completely enveloping the main axis, making the axis more conspicuous than in uncorticated uniaxial genera.

Habitat

Subtidal, epilithic, epiphytic or epizoic on worm tubes and molluscs; rarely extremely low intertidal where very shaded.

North Pacific Distribution

Aleutian Islands, Alaska, to northern British Columbia

Similar taxa

Pterothamnion spp. are not corticated.
