Description:
Thallus is dark brown, thick, reaching 1.5 m (5 ft) tall. The holdfast is branched, the stipe somewhat rigid, and the blade often split down to 10 cm (4 in) above its base. Mucilage ducts occur near the surface of stipe. Habitat: This perennial is found on rock in the very low intertidal to shallow subtidal. Similar taxa: Hedophyllum nigripes.
