Description:
Thallus is crisp, shiny, deep red to yellowish-pink, reaching 10-15 cm (4-10 in) tall. The thallus is narrow, flattened, repeatedly dichotomously branched, occasionally palmate, tapering to a discoidal holdfast. Some thalli become hollow and resemble the North Atlantic species Devaleraea ramentacea. Habitat: This annual occurs on rock in the high to mid, sometimes low, intertidal (generally above Palmaria hecatensis and Devaleraea mollis, if present) as well as in streams running through the intertidal. Similar taxa: Devaleraea mollis, Callophyllis spp.
